My dear friend Elise showed me this dish while I was visiting Denver during the seventies. Back then it was an exotic dish. Tofu and hoisin sauce were new to us Americans. My Dad would make Japanese food during the sixties but these two ingredients I didn’t see until years later. At that time Los Angles had only a few Japanese restaurants. I didn’t see a sushi restaurant until the early eighties.
