Ingredients

  •  1/2 cup Toor dal
  •  1/2 cup basmati rice
  •  3 cups water
  •  1 tablespoon fresh ginger
  •  1 teaspoon salt
  •  1 tablespoon turmeric or 1 teaspoon fresh turmeric dice fine
  •  dash of salt
  •  1/8 teaspoon black pepper

Chank

  •  1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  •   1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 3 cloves garlic
  •  1 medium diced fine onions
  •  1 medium diced tomatoes
  •  7 leaves curry leaves
  •  1/2 tablespoon ghee


Garnish

  • 10 sprigs fresh cilantro diced fine
  •  1 oz coconut flakes
 

Instructions

 Wash Lentils.
 Add water, rice and lentils to pan.
 Turn heat to high.
 Add diced fresh ginger and turmeric.
 When mixture boils turn down heat and let simmer for 30 minutes. 
 
 Make Chunk- In separate pan sauté in ghee on a high flame cumin seeds, onions, garlic, tomatoes and 7 curry leaves. Cook until golden brown. Add mixture to lentils. Add salt and black pepper to taste. Garnish with fresh coriander and coconut flakes.

This dish is from Southern India. Its rice and dal cooked together with spices. It’s very good for you.
